La Quinta, postlude

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Thought this frame from our getaway was worth sharing. I savored watching K and E this weekend, especially when he sang worship songs for her. She stared at him, transfixed by his voice.

I am so grateful for a husband who loves the Lord his God with all his heart and soul and strength; who loves the law of the Lord; and who impresses it on his children (at present, through song) when at home, when on the road, when falling asleep and when rising.

At some point in the not-so-distant-future, E will understand the truths her dad is singing to her. What a day that will be!

Blackstone Revisited

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Every summer, the Alliance Defense Fund’s Blackstone Legal Fellowship trains law students in Christ-centered legal philosophy and organizes six-week public interest internships for them. For most of the decade, my mother-in-law has worked for Blackstone. In 2005, B was a Blackstone Intern. In 2006, I was a Blackstone Intern.

Over the last two weeks, I further cemented our young family’s tie to Blackstone. I served as a Mentor, facilitating discussion, instigating off-hours activities, and helping make sure the trains ran on time. My fellow mentors were all excellent and had quite the sense of humor. In the “Gym Teachers” shot below, all the other guys had put towels under their shirts; my gut required no such enhancement.

The Gym Teachers

While the speaker lineup was largely the same, there were several excellent additions since two summers ago.

But the biggest change came from the program’s director, Jeff Ventrella. Jeff’s schtick has always highlighted the various speaker’s ties to Idaho and Italy as the sources of all good things (since he himself is an Italian-Idahoan). But this year, after his son returned from spending his freshman year at Hillsdale College, Jeff elevated my alma mater into this rarified company. I, of course, have long known that Hillsdale is the promised land, but it is excellent to see the increase of its renown.

The only downside of the past two weeks has been my separation from B and E. As wonderful as Blackstone is, I am ecstatic to be home.

La Quinta, La Quinta!

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

We’re back for the second time at La Quinta in Palm Springs, thanks to K’s law firm. I love this place. And not just because it gave me a respite from studying for the bar exam last summer. This place is objectively lovely. The white stucco haciendas with red tile roofs clustered around dozens of little swimming pools. The palm trees, cactus gardens, and serene Santa Rosa mountains as a backdrop. The Mexican tile rimming the pool, and surprising me with pattern on the occasional staircase.

K’s off right now getting a massage, which is just what he needs as he heads into the final five weeks of cramming before he takes the bar exam. E is napping. In thirty minutes, I’ll walk over to the spa, hand E over to her dad, and enjoy a massage and facial. ::sigh::
