Soft blocks for baby

October 25th, 2008

E adores these blocks that I made her this summer. The colors intrigue her eyes, while her little hands explore the texture of the fabric. Most recently, she’s started knocking over the block towers I build. Then she smiles at me as if to say, “See, Mom, I’ve got skills!”

The blocks were easy enough to make. I cut two inch craft foam into blocks and scavenged for cute fabric. Each block required six, 2.5 in. fabric squares. I sewed the pieces together inside out, except for the last seam. (I made a demo block out of ugly fabric to determine the seam allowance.) After sewing all but one side together, I turned my creation inside out, inserted a foam block, and hand-stitched the block closed.

And I recognize some of the fabric! :-) The blue dotted swiss with roses and the green with orange and yellow flowers. I made things for you girls with that fabric…. but I can’t remember what…

Oh I love them!!! :) For some reason, I get all intimidated around a sewing machine, so maybe I can even hand-stitch the fabric squares together? Or maybe I just have to get over my irrational fear of sewing machines… ha! I’ve started making the birds for my bird mobile and will post pics soon.
