‘Twas the night before the bar exam,

and all through the house,

the scent of chili pleased her spouse.

There’s a giant pot of K’s favorite chili simmering on the stove. Poor guy has been studying like a fiend for weeks. The exam is tomorrow and Wednesday. (Haven’t we done this already?) I thought a bowl of chili and a slice of warm gf cornbread would help him relax. Plus, it’s been raining on-and-off all day so comfort food sounds just right.

{a version of} “Commander” Tim’s Submarine Chili from The Ultimate Chili Book

3 medium garlic cloves, minced

1 medium onion, chopped

1 TB vegetable oil

1 lb. ground beef

2 c. water

1 (14.5 oz) can tomatoes

2 TB chili powder

2 TB paprika

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp salt

2 tsp cayenne pepper

2 c. corn

2 c. kidney beans

In a large pot, saute the garlic and onion in the oil. Mix in the beef and brown. Pour in water until it’s simmering. Add the tomatoes and seasonings. Simmer for 1 hour. Dump in the corn and the beans. Simmer for another hour or so. Enjoy!

Lots of new

K has been preoccupied with lots of new opportunities. First, he made his debut as a playwright in a humorous sketch performed by the first-year associates at the firm holiday party last week. The reviews were good; one co-worker even said he should write for SNL. (If only K could stomach regularly mocking middle America and political conservatives.) Next, K’s singing a duet for our church’s Christmas service. He and his partner practiced last night and sounded great. Finally, Keith is giving a lunch presentation on new case law to his practice group at work tomorrow. Wish him luck!

K and the great wide world

Today, K started work as a litigator at a huge law firm. He’s like Tom Cruise in The Firm, except K’s taller and his firm isn’t evil. He has a big office, a laptop and blackberry, a view of the pacific ocean, and a pile of case files. He’s a brain-for-hire who will fight battles (with the pen) and crusade (wielding a brief case) in the courts.

Meanwhile, the home front is too quiet and usually tidy. Because K and I married when we were both still in law school, we’ve rarely been apart in our eighteen months of marital bliss. I miss my constant companion. So does E. K is quick to play with her, feed her, tickle her, sing to her.

Oh how the fans miss him. But we know that the Lord brought K to this job so we’re excited watch God’s good plans for him unfold.
